Post Gorthaur's Maps
Edited to show off latest stuff:

This is what I have been working on recently. Mainly setting up my favorite environments which are lush day, lush night/twilight and lush morning. Also desert day and night and later some snow landscapes. I added in some very primitive ruin meshes in the desert and I have ideas for other ones that will make it more of a real level. Skies are from UDK. Spent a lot of time looking for tree meshes to use but only found one that I liked in a $5 collection on Unity Store. I chopped it up and made alternate versions so I have a variety of trees to use. Also made some very simple structures. The next thing I want to do besides make more and better structures is getting grass on these levels to bring them to the next level visually.

Original tree on left but I smoothed the vegetation so it looks better. They are still very low poly but I may go in and smooth over trouble areas in the trunks. Smoothing the entire trunks make them look too snaky. Still need to add another alternate that I made that's a better version of the tall tree. Learned basics in blender such as basic navigation and editing and fixing the UVs when I break them by stretching things out and adding new geometry.

It's worth noting that Freefall might be moving over to Unity, so you might want to start tinkering with that as well (importing heightmaps is relatively easy). Any assets you make would probably be more than welcome. Creating some stock shapes would be a decent start.

A fellow terrain designer!

I'm PFF's current map designer, I'm trying to create a standard set of criteria for all PFF maps and prepare them for use in multiple gametypes.
First off, if you're interested in helping out I'd love to talk to you and exchange ideas etc...
I've also developed a nice workflow for creating terrain that I can share in detail.

PFF might indeed be switching over the unity, but that isn't as bad as it sounds. I like the look of your own terrain and I think we could definitely use it and create a proper map out of it. It's quite easy to transfer terrain from UDK to unity in the form of a heightmap:
http://forums.epicgames.com/threads/749 ... -heightmap

You can touch up the G16 that UDK exports with a program like Terresculptor (which I'm using myself)
http://www.lilchips.com/hmes.htm
The only thing you'll end up losing is the plants etc.. The textures can easily be re-used in Unity.
I'm currently making the transfers myself - be glad that you haven't started whiteboxing the maps yet like I have :'(

Sadly because Hirez owns the Tribes IP we can't use original heightmaps - but that doesn't mean we can't make our own interpretations.

But yeah if you're interested, PM me and I'll give you my details and we can have a chat!

Cool looking map. I'm always a fan of a beach battle.

Greth is right about the IP situation. For any maps to be officially included we have to avoid IP infringement; leaves the door open to the countless modder maps though(with permission of course).

I'm working on porting PFF to unity, which likely will go well. UDK is still fine for messing around, but keep in mind the effort required to port engine to engine; I recommend against refining ideas much beyond a rough state.

Hard to say what exactly could be going on with the grass/sand transition. You using any materials that automatically transition based on surface direction or height?

Oh no I just started feeling confident with Unreal again!

Thanks I will send you a PM Greth.

Ignorance yes I am placing many of the materials based on height and slope. I guess the squary-ness is from the terrain polygons, that makes sense! Maybe I can just paint over that transition by hand and it will look better. Someone else suggested increasing the resolution of the terrain mesh which I may try as a last resort.

These were originally for my own Tribes-inspired hobby project but I'd like to share them with Project Freefall since you guys are so open with your own project. I Updated the first post to show my latest work. I'll get around to converting stuff to Unity pretty soon I think. Importing terrains into Unity takes a few seconds so is no problem and thanks to Greth I have a tutorial ready to go to use the splat map technique for texturing everything.

I couldn't resist making Broadside inspired floating bases to help me learn how to model structures.

If anyone wants any of the assets to play with let me know and I'll share them somehow.

I've been messing around with the deprecated UDK stuff and have rebalanced the weapons to be more like Tribes 2. Is it okay if I upload a video at some point to show them off in my maps or at least make a private video?

Looking forward to learning with you guys and making more stuff! I'll try to get on Mumble more often. Saturdays during the day (USA) are best for me.

Agreed. And I think understated. That's some awesome work.

Well fuck ...

T-That's amazing. You don't need to thank me, at this point I think you'll have to teach me! I've been spending by time in Blender trying to make indoor maps work. I don't know my way around splatmapping and general texturing just yet. Looks like you've got one up on me.

I'd also love to take a look inside that floating base - if it has one already. We can talk about scaling and stuff as well. I think I sent you my skype details in a previous PM. I'd love to see this stuff implemented.

Oh yea, go to town with videos. Would be great if you mentioned somewhere that your using Project Free Fall for testing, but do whatever. A specific intent for project free fall is to enable people to enable testing and making cool tribes-like stuff.
